Guru Spotlight: Batalash (Samantha)
28 August 2014
Batalash is the baddest team in beauty. Samantha, Angela, Jkissa, and Dominique have a rare combination of beauty and edge that gives their videos that special something that makes you want to watch more. They’re “advocates for showing what new images of beauty can be – think colored eyebrows and ombre lips”.
Samantha just calls it like she sees it. She’s straight up, swears when needed and is one of those cool people that doesn’t need to apologize for what she says because she always keeps it real. She’s a beautiful mashup of Hip-Hop and Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. We’ve interviewed Samantha here, and can’t wait to get to know the rest of the team. They make videos together and separately which gives their team unique diversity and the ability to show a really wide variety of looks and tips.
What is the best beauty advice that you have gotten?
To stop taking beauty advice and start doing whatever you want (as long as it's safe/hygienic).
What’s the worst beauty advice that you’ve gotten?
To run my eyeliner pencil over a flame to make it have "smoother application".
If your vlog had a mission statement, what would it be?
To make others realize that they are kickass as they are. There's so many people that spend their lives trying to be somebody else, and I think it's time everyone starts loving who they are and not caring what anyone else is doing.
What are your favorite vlogs to watch?
NIKKIETUTORIALS! I love her. And Shaaanxo, lozcurtis, Jaclyn Hill. They are all amazing.
What beauty products can you not live without?
YSL #10 Beige Tribute lipstick. I wish I had never bought it, because it is way more than I ever want to spend on a lipstick but it is THE PERFECT NUDE. Also, moisturizer of any kind, Anastasia Dipbrow, and false lashes.
What was your first make-up experience that you remember?
I got these cheap eyeshadow palettes in my stocking at Christmas when I was maybe ten. That, and I would always keep the tiny lipstick testers when my mom would sell for Avon. I did a lot of playing around with makeup, and it wasn't until about grade ten that I started going all out.
Do you stil use the cannon 60d? What do you use to edit your videos?
Yep! And I use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit.
What are the best aspects of running your own vlog? What are the hardest?
I am not limited in anyway. I can create/look/talk however I want, which is awesome. The hardest aspect is keeping up the motivation to always create new stuff. Some days, you just want to do nothing - ESPECIALLY when you are your own boss.
What are your favorite places to shop?
Online. I don't love shopping in-store, because I usually get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that's there and feel like I'm missing out on everything.
Are there any trends that you are inspired by this season?
I am so out of the loop with trends this year it hurts! I'm typically not one to base my makeup on trends/seasons. If I want to rock a dark vampy lip mid-august, I do it without thinking.
If you have $1000 to spend on make-up, what would you buy?
I would buy a ton of foundation. I am still searching for my holy grail, so I would probably start a full blown mission.
What’s in your travel beauty bag?
Everything. Leave no man behind. I do NOT pack lightly when it comes to makeup.
What is your most memorable beauty faux-pas?
My brows. My brows are an ever-changing story. I've had my super thin over plucked days, my super dark and thick, it's just all a mess. I look back through old photos and I'm like, "what was I thinking"?
Who is your make-up inspiration?
I love Roshar and Alex Box, but I gain inspiration from all over!
What is it like working from home? Do you miss working at a counter at all?
Working from home is amazing. I feel so blessed. I get to wake up every day completely in charge of what I accomplish or want to do. It's nice being able to say "I'll just fly to LA next week" and not have to worry about when I can take time off, or getting things approved. The only thing I miss about working at a counter is being around people.
Have you always been as outgoing and open as we see on youtube?
I definitely stopped caring what people think about me at a younger age than most. Or rather, I stopped getting embarrassed by things. People are going to love you or hate you either way, and it feels much better to have people love you for who you actually are rather than someone you're pretending to be.
Which person/celebrity inspires you most in life?
I honestly don't spend a lot of time obsessing over celebrities. I think I get more inspired by "everyday" people - but my favorite MUA's are Alex Box and Roshar.
What is one of your favorite memories from the past year?
This past year has honestly been so surreal. A lot has happened, it's hard to pick just one moment. I think one of the coolest memories was meeting Anastasia of Anastasia Beverly Hills. She showed myself and my business partner how she does brows, and I remember sitting there watching her and thinking it was so crazy this was happening in front of me. In my first class of makeup school, the teacher talked about Anastasia and how she was the "queen of brows". So to be there, watching her work was very surreal.
What are your favorite things to do off-camera?
Play WoW, watch Game of Thrones or Adventure Time, and kind of just kick back. I love spending time at the beach - if I'm around water and warm weather, I'm happy! I like to spend time talking to followers on twitter/email/Instagram, it always cheers me up.
What’s your favorite city to visit and why?
LA! I love it there. The weather, the feel of the city, everything. I have some close friends there as well. If it was easier to move there as a Canadian, I would!
If you’re up for sharing one of your hardest moments for the past year, could you tell us how you got through it?
In September, I got "let go" from my full time job. In short, I was terminated for standing up for a friend/coworker. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and it seemed like everything was going wrong for me. I spent a lot of time not making any money and just being mopey all the time. Eventually, I decided I wanted to try and get into social media/blogging - I told myself I would spend one month working really hard at it, and if it didn't work out, then I'd move on and get a "regular job". It worked out. Haha.
