Guru Spotlight: Mrsbeautyosauruslex

06 October 2014

There is something kind of perfect about finding that great new beauty guru - someone beautiful and hilarious, quirky and mesmerizing with really awesome videos that you can’t wait to share with your friends. Alex (mrsbeautyosauruslex) is that guru! She gives great beauty tips, stunning soft makeup tutorials and really helpful reviews.

Youtube is the perfect creative outlet for Alex and we’re so glad it exists because her ingenuity and wit just flow out. She shoots and edits her own lookbooks as if she had a mega team of producers. But the best part is she maintains the intimate feeling that you get with a one-person show. One of the things that we love most about Alex is her comedic genius. If you want to watch beauty and smile at the same time, then watch Mrsbeautyosauruslex, because somehow she has an infinite supply of hilarious comments and expressions!

What is the best beauty advice that you have gotten?

A base coat of water proof mascara will keep your lashes curled all day. I always curl, apply my favorite waterproof mascara, then gently curl again, and top it off with another mascara I am using at the moment.

What’s the worst beauty advice that you’ve gotten?

Choose your foundation shade by matching it to your hand color. Eek! What many don’t realize is that your hand sees loads more sun than your face, and with exfoliation your face will definitely be lighter than your hand.

Who is your make-up inspiration?

Jessica Alba! She pulls off a graphic cat eye, gold tones and bold lips better than anyone.

If your vlog had a mission statement, what would it be?

“To inspire creativity, and empower future generations”

What are your favorite vlogs to watch?

I have a serious obsession for daily vlogs, my favorites at the moment are Zoe Sugg, Tanya Burr, Amelia Liana and Gabriella Lindley. They give a glimpse at their life and it makes them more relatable, it is truly refreshing.

What beauty products can you not live without?

I never go anywhere without a lip balm in my pocket. LUSH Honey Trap and Burt’s Bees Dark Chocolate and Blueberry are my favorites. Maybelline the Rocket Volum’ Express Waterproof is also a staple for me!

How long have you been into make-up?

It has only been under two years that I have been pursuing makeup and not just applying it. I consider myself rather creative and this is just another form of a creative outlet for me. It started off as that and now I get all giddy about new makeup launches and purple eyeliner!

If you could only make up one part of your face per day, what would it be (i.e. eyes, lips, lashes)?

Oh no, this is so difficult for me, haha! I would say eyes, but then I would feel so naked without my blush and lipstick on!

What was your first make-up experience that you remember?

It was the first day of sixth grade, and I wore white eyeshadow from lash line to eyebrow and the shiniest lip gloss ever (I do have photo evidence, which makes it all the worse). Later that night my mom took me to Target and bought me Maybelline Great Lash mascara in Brownish Black, I believe that was a subtle hint to tone it down. Thanks mom!

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start a vlog?

Go for it! Had I known how much greatness lied on the other side of starting a blog, I would’ve begun ages ago (still kicking myself about it). As far as advice; be yourself and stay true to that and upload regularly.

What type of camera do you use? What do you use to edit your videos?

I am a Nikon kinda gal, so I use a Nikon D5100, most of my editing is very subtle but to edit I use Lightroom.

What are the best aspects of running your own vlog? What are the hardest?

The best is that I get to make friends from all over the world. When I get a comment from someone saying that I have helped them, that feeling keeps my fire alive. The hardest is that I am a one (wo)man show. I am forced to wear a lot of hats; photographer, editor, writer, and so on. It has taught me a lot of responsibility, and I am beyond grateful for all of it.

What are your favorite places to shop?

MAC, I am a sucker for the sleek black packaging and all of the colors, anyone who knows me would tell you that I couldn’t walk by without taking a look. J.Crew for clothes, their sale section is surprisingly, amazing. I have a not-so-secret obsession with stationary and I could spend hours (and I have) in Paper Source!

Are there any trends that you are inspired by this season?

Mulberry is doing a lot of darker, more masculine colors (moss, spruce blue, a mulberry shade) and mixing it with delicate, pearl colored pieces. These colors could be translated to wardrobe and makeup inspiration. I love everything that is going on with the collection!

If you have $1000 to spend on make-up, what would you buy?

Damn, that’s a nice shopping spree! I actually don’t own any YSL lipsticks, so I would get a few of those. Some Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders, a few (or 10) bright colored OCC Lip Tars, and Chanel Chance Eau Tendre. I feel the sudden urge to go shopping now!

What is your most memorable beauty faux-pas?

See answer about 6th grade, haha! Also in my early days of Youtube I thought that I had to wear more makeup and ended up just looking like I was about to perform in one of those toddler pageants.

What are some of your favorite memories from the past year?

My husband and I went on our honeymoon, and spent almost six weeks exploring Europe. It was a magical adventure and we are so blessed to have been able to experience it together. Four days after we got home we got our first dog, Gus, and just two months after that I started my Youtube channel. It has been a wild and rewarding journey, to say the least!

If you’re up for sharing one of your hardest moments for the past year, could you tell us how you got through it?

With choosing to do something creative and out of the ordinary, such as blogging and being on Youtube, there will be those who do not quite understand it. Learning to do this for me has been one of the biggest obstacles to overcome. It is one of those battles that I have to face whenever I tell people what it is that I do and want to do, but being confident in myself and my choices, keeps me focused.

What does your husband think of your life on youtube?

This makes me smile, because he partially doesn’t truly understand it but is very supportive nonetheless. It wasn’t until last night when we saw the new Dancing with the Stars ad featuring Bethany Mota, that he understood just the possibilities that could come from my hobby. I think more than anyone he understands it all because he sees me running around the house chasing the sun light, editing into the late hours of the evening, and smiling at my screen like a little school girl when I am replying to comments. I’ll let you in on a secret, he calls me nick names based on Beautyosaurus Lex. When I sneeze I’m “Sneezosaurus Lex”, when I’m sleepy, “Sleepyosaurus Lex”, and so on, it always makes me laugh.

What person has inspired you most in life?

Hands down my mother. She is resilient, smart, hard working and confident. She has taught me the most important of lessons and shows me the kind of woman, worker and mom that I want to be someday. We laugh until we cry and dance shamelessly in public together. I truly believe that we are kindred spirits.

How has starting a vlog changed your daily life? What have you learned from it?

Apart from having nearly 19 thousands new friends from all over the world, starting a blog and Youtube channel has filled a creative void that was there for far too long. I go to bed excited to film and write, and wake up earlier than I ever have just from the pure joy of loving what I do! On a daily basis I fill a lot of my free time with blog things; bettering my photography skills, following the best sunlight around my house, writing posts, planning videos, filming those videos, editing, editing, editing (did I mention that editing takes three times longer than I ever imagined that it would) uploading, scheduling and bettering my typing and eating simultaneously skills. I believe that starting my blog and Youtube channel has helped me with time management, and though I set my own schedule, I think it keeps me more accountable for using my time wisely.
