Guru Spotlight: Heidicupcake
15 September 2014
When watching heidicupcake’s videos, you will quickly see that she's the quintessential vlogger: she’s not only talented, spunky, and beautiful, but also a loving mom to her eight-year-old daughter and a motivated student finishing up her degree in marketing. Like all of us, Heidi has her imperfections: she’s struggled with eyeliner pencils, taking selfies, and has grappled with skin insecurities. Thanks to positive feedback and support from her subscribers, however, Heidi has been able to build her confidence. We love her honest attitude about battling online negativity and conviction in not needing to know what’s trending in order to be one of the leading make-up gurus. We chatted with Heidi while she was on vacation recently – see what she shared with us.
What was your first make-up experience that you remember?
Hmm, probably back when I was really young – my aunt would do my makeup for my dance recitals. It was my favorite part about performing!
How long have you been into make-up?
I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup in high school, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t wear it (gasp). I carried makeup remover wipes in my book bag and cleaned my face off on the bus ride home! Clearly, I was super rebellious.
What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever gotten?
“Don't overpluck your eyebrows.” This was back in high school. I failed to follow that advice.
What do you do when you’re not vlogging?
I’m cooking, cleaning, eating…mommy-ing!
What celebrity inspires you the most, and why?
I’m not easily inspired by celebrities, as I don’t follow them very closely. I used to care a lot about what they wore and where they went when I was younger, but my interests have shifted over the years.
Who is your make-up inspiration?
Kim Kardashian. She’s always so flawless! Growing up, it was Jennifer Lopez. I used to emulate her makeup and style in general.
What are your favorite vlogs to watch?
There are too many to name, but ClaireMarshall, LeighannSays, EssieButton, Shaaanxo, NikkieTutorials, JaclynHill, Teni-MissMaven.com, and about a million more. I feel like such a jerk not naming everyone. I watch so many girls for so many different reasons.
What beauty products can you not live without?
My holy grail products are Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, Make Up Forever HD foundation, Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, and Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla & Macadamia.
If you could only make up one part of your face per day, what would it be?
My face. Like, the skin on my face. I have problematic skin which at times makes me incredibly insecure. I think if you have nice skin, that’s all that matters. Of course, if I had nice skin naturally, my response would be different.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start a vlog?
Brace yourself. There will be people who don’t like you and will let yo know it. I am still working on that whole ‘thicker skin’ thing. However, don’t let rude comments or ‘dislikes’ stop you from doing something that you love. The positivity I receive far surpasses any of the negativity. If starting a vlog is something you want to do, then do it.
What kind of camera do you use and what do you use to edit your videos?
I film with a Canon Rebel T31 and I edit with Final Cut Pro X.
What are the best aspects of running your own vlog? What are the hardest?
The best aspects are undoubtedly my subscribers. They have helped me through my insecurities and have lifted me up over the last couple of years. Some of my subscribers have been with me since I started my channel, and they have supported my changes over that time. I love them all so very much. I feel like I have thousands of really good friends who are always there for me. I’m an incredibly lucky person, I remind myself of this every day. The hardest part…. Learning to just let the negativity go. The fact that a person wants to hurt my feelings upsets me more than what they actually say. I don’t understand people who go out of their way to bring others down. I don’t like everyone I come across on YouTube or in life, but it would never enter my mind to hurt them, I mean… why?
Are there any trends that you are inspired by this season?
I honestly don’t follow trends. I couldn’t even tell you what is trending right now!
What’s in your travel beauty bag?
I’m actually away on vacation right now. Let me go grab my makeup bag….okay, I’m’ back. I have a travel size of the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, Make Up Forever HD foundation, Maybelline Age Rewind #60 brightener, ELF High Definition Undereye Setting Powder, Benefit The Porefessional Agent Zero Shine, Benefit Watts Up highlighting stick, Nars bronzer/blush duo in Laguna/Orgasm, Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara, Nars Larger Than Life liners in Rue Bonaparte and Via Veneto, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette and brown powder in Dark Brown, Benefit Gimme Brow, MAC paint pot in Painterly, Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid eyeliner in Intense Black and Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette. I’m not sure if you meant for me to list everything, but there you go!
What is your daily routine?
Wake up, take my daughter to school, come home, drink hot tea with my breakfast while catching up on my favorite YouTubers, get my face on if I am going to film that day then I film, if I am not filming that day then I get other work done, then I pick my daughter up from school, work with her on her homework, make dinner, workout, come home, shower, spend time with the boyfriend, sleep and repeat.
Do you go to school?
I am currently taking a break from school. I finished my Associate’s in business back in December 2013. I got super burnt out and needed a break before I continued on with my bachelor’s. I am hoping to start back up in the fall. I plan on obtaining my bachelor’s degree in business marketing.
What inspired you to start your own vlog?
My boyfriend! He bought me a camera for Christmas and told me I should start a channel. I didn’t start right away because I was so scared, but I finally got around to it and I am so grateful I did.
How has starting a vlog changed your daily life? What have you learned from it?
Well, it has changed it completely, because now my entire life revolves around YouTube! Whether or not I’m filming, commenting everyone back on my videos, planning for my next videos, editing… EDITING… it takes up so much of my life! I put a lot of value on the editing process.
What are your favorite things to do off-camera?
Spend time with my daughter, boyfriend and friends. I don’t get to spend as much time with my friends as I’d like, but I value the time that I do get with them.
