Guru Spotlight: Letzmakeup

22 October 2014

Siobhan (LetzMakeup) not only makes inspiring and beautiful videos but she's also a teacher. We really appreciate the fun way she educates us on makeup and beauty trends. When Siobhan talks about new ingredients like Retinol, she dives deep and gives us details on what it does, different ways to put it to use and its pros and cons. It feels both professional and personal and we end up taking it all in.

We like Siobhan's hilarious and "real" side to her. "Feeling like poo” or “wallowing in filth like a swamp monster” are just a few of her classic lines that make us fall in love with her. As if she weren’t cool enough, she has some truly amazing tattoos! There are some great Q&A videos dedicated just to her tatoos...in case your curious like we were. Check them out!

What is the best beauty advice that you have gotten?

It might sound a bit boring and rehashed but getting enough sleep & drinking enough water are my main 2 necessities for 'beauty 'maintenance', If I don't get my 8+hrs kip I never look very well! Oh and I always wear SPF, even in winter!!!

What’s the worst beauty advice that you’ve gotten?

Putting egg in my hair to give it shine... I tried it once and was washing it out for about an hour!! Plus my hair didn't look particularly shiny after.

Who is your make-up inspiration?

Makeup Artists like Roshar, Alex Box, Kabuki & Caroline Saulnier are all people I look up to in the industry. They are all beyond creative and definitely push the envelope when it comes to innovation and inspiration.

If your vlog had a mission statement, what would it be?

To teach and inspire everyone from the stay at home momma to the makeup enthusiast, from the beginner to more established makeup artists and everyone in between in a natural and real manner.

...or something along those lines :)

What are your favorite vlogs to watch?

I love Nikkietutorials, she is crazy talented and so funny and is still only a little fairy of about 20yrs of age. VintageOrTacky run by the lovely Cora is a great channel. For creativity it has to be GoldieStarling, Angie is a phenomenal makeup artist who now largely focuses on Special Effects makeup.

What beauty products can you not live without?

Eyelash curlers, sunscreen, concealer, cleansing water and my tweezers!!!

If you had $1000 to spend on make-up, what would you buy?

Oh that really wouldn't take me long to spend! ha ha. I would book a trip to Paris which houses my closest Sephora and spend it all in there. I LOVE Sephora and am sad it's not in Ireland or even the UK. I really want to try NARS Makeup which is also in SpaceNK which recently opened in Dublin so I could also just head there and get a good selection from the brand from there!

If you could only make up one part of your face per day, what would it be (i.e. eyes, lips, lashes)?

That's easy, on a good skin day I'd say lashes, even just curling them is often enough for me as I am so dark (hair) but on a bad skin day it would be skin... which sadly is a lot of days.

What was your first make-up experience that you remember?

Probably when I was really young and my Mam was applying her lipstick to her lips for mass on Sundays and then applying the same lipstick to her cheeks before rubbing it in. For a long time I thought lipstick was the only makeup products there was!

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start a vlog?

It's a bit of a cliche now but you really have to be yourself and cover things that interest you or it will quickly start to feel like a chore. I don't play up to the camera or try to be particularly funny or cool because I wouldn't be comfortable doing that, It just wouldn't be me. I am perhaps a tad more reserved than I am in real life but I have come a long way since starting 5 years ago. I am personally attracted to more humble personalities on Youtube, this can also include ridiculously funny characters as well but only ones who are naturally that way, not people forcing it. So be yourself, whatever way you may be, and people will appreciate you for it!

What is your most memorable beauty faux-pas?

Plucking my eyebrows to oblivion as a teenager, I'd say each brow had about 5 hairs left by the time I'd finished. Luckily my brows grow like weeds and always grow back to their fullest without much hassle.

Are there any trends that you are inspired by this season?

I love the dark lip trend that is always repeated in one way or another each winter. In fashion, I'm very happy to see the 90's back in fashion. I've always kept elements from this era in my personal style since my teenage years.

What are your favorite places to shop?

For makeup locally it's Boots and Brown Thomas, but when I'm away it's Sephora all the way!!!

If you could give some advice to yourself as a teen, what would it be?

I was actually pretty strong headed as a teen and had a very strong personal style from about the age of 13/14. Maybe it would have to be to not care about what others think about you. That's their issue, not yours.

What are the best aspects of running your own vlog? What are the hardest?

Having total control over my content is a huge appeal to vlogging for me, as I said above, it's really important for me to cover things that interest me and that I feel passionate about. Interacting with subscribers and viewers is also one of the best parts of it. People are so supportive and friendly, and this totally outweighs any negativity that might crop up.

Time management can be hard as I am a professional makeup artist outside of Youtube and that can take up a lot of my time over the busier periods. Also, I am naturally quite a private person which doesn't really mesh well with being on Youtube as people want to feel like they know you and always want to know more! It's something I definitely try to find a balance with.

Where does the name shivinthebox come from?

ShivInTheBox is the name for my second Youtube channel which I haven't updated in forever!!! It's also the name for my non-makeup twitter and blog. It's basically a play on words, It obviously comes initially from Jack in the box. Shiv is my nickname (short for Siobhán which most non-Irish people struggle with) and I thought the box in this circumstance could stand for the computer which youtube is watched on! So Shiv In The Box = Shiv on your Youtube/computer screen.

LetzMakeup is my main Youtube Channel and moniker which doesn't really mean anything other than lets do some makeup!

What person has inspired you most in life?

Both my parents are my biggest inspirations and are why I am the way I am. They have always been so supportive of my art (I only ever wanted to be an artist from a very very young age) and everything I do. My mam is definitely my best buddy apart from my sisters. My Dad is super cool, thanks to him I am very laid back & level headed but with a little divilment thrown in for good measure!
